Tucked away in a sleep side street behind Elsternwick’s main strip lies Penta, an ultramodern cafe with warehouse vibes and what may be Melbourne’s most colourful brunch menu.
The masterminds behind Temperance Society, Legacy, and Mob Espresso, have combined their expertise and five culinary brains to create Penta, Elsternwick’s newest and shiniest kid on the block.
The interior is understated – lined with polished concrete benches and bare steel and glass sweeping walls. A few leafy green plants break up the shiny whites and greys. The minimalistic design approach works well with dishes arranged and presented as artistically as Penta does. Who needs a centrepiece when you have a burgundy Chia Beetroot Pudding topped high with colourful passionfruit, kiwi, strawberries, and watermelon jerky staring at you?
Whether it’s healthy food day or cheat day, Penta’s menu caters for everyone. The menu consists of vibrant dishes like Rainbow Chakra with walnut beetroot pesto, baby carrots, broccolini, golden beetroot, goats cheese, and poached eggs stacked atop sourdough, Chia Beetroot Pudding, and Orange Blossom Hotcakes. There’s Nutella Panna Cotta for those feeling indulgent and Okonomiyaki for your cultural friends.
The real gem is a clever twist on the classic eggs benedict – the Penta Benedict. Braised beef cheek, watercress, poached eggs and jalapeno hollandaise stacked atop fluffy sweet potato waffles made by the gods. The flavour profile is the perfect balance between sweet and savoury and the waffles are light as air, a welcome change for a traditionally heavy dish.
Penta has a few coffee offerings including milk and black coffee, filter, cold drip, cold brew and spritzers. For the non-coffee drinkers there’s and extensive selection of smoothies, juices, and a turmeric coconut latte.
For foodies and locals alike, Penta is definitely worth the trip for an indulgent (or healthy) breakfast and great coffee.
